Hawassa Water Supply and Sewerage Service Enterprise was established on September 25, 1982.The enterprise is supplying clean water for 43 years and started providing desludging service in 2010 GC. Our Utility started supplying water with only one source i.e. Kedo river treatment plant but now the enterprise constructed 26 different water sources. Regarding the types of water sources, the utility has 22 boreholes, 3 springs and 1 river treatment plant. From these sources, our utility has a capacity of supplying more than 27,000 m3 of water per day. The water coverage of the city reached 86% for 7 sub-cities and 78% for Hawela Tula rural sub-city.  

Since the population size of our city, Hawassa, is increasing with very high rate and also economic activity in the city is growing fast, it imposed high pressure on our utility to plan urgently for additional new water sources. Therefore, our utility has already planned two types of plans for the city to increase the water supply.

The two types of plans we have today and striving to implement are short term (urgent) water supply plan and long-term water supply plan. Short term water supply plan aims mainly at supplying clean water to Dato and Addis Ketema areas of the city. These areas of the city have been facing water shortage because the water sources supplied to the areas are only 2 boreholes which are insufficient to satisfy the need of the residents. The other short term water supply project is Fara-Hiteta water supply project. This project is under construction to solve the water supply challenges of the Fara and Hiteta areas of the city. The project reached around 70% of its construction achievement.
